5 TIPS FOR ASSERTING YOURSELF

1.  Describe the impact on the business, co-workers...

I 'd like to talk to you about the recent work on the files....

The last couple of files had to be redone because....

This added extra workload on me....and caused a delay in the project.

Meeting our deadline on this project is essential....

Our credibility is on the line...

2. Identify your (potential) contribution to the problem...

Maybe I wasn't clear about this before you started....

Perhaps I should have talked to you before about what I wanted to see...

I realize that I was out of the office for several days...

3.  Explore their reality... & their reaction to what you're saying

How do you feel we're managing the workload?

What do you think about what happened?

Why do you think you ran into problems?

What  do you think could be done so this doesn't happen again...?

Can you think of anything that might get in the way next time...?

4.  Confirm understanding of expectations...on both sides

Next time you're working on these files, it's important to make sure...

Do you think we've covered everything this time.....?

Is there anything else we should keep in mind....?

5.  Specify... & agree on future next steps

In order that we don't run into problems again,...

If you run into any snags, please let me know....

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call me...
